Pittsburgh Attorney Deborah Maliver Elected to Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County

Leading medical negligence attorney in Western Pennsylvania named to join elite organization of just 250 trial lawyers in region

Pittsburgh, PA (Lexis Nexis) September 4, 2008 -- Deborah S. Maliver, M.D., J.D., senior partner in the Pittsburgh-based law firm of Biancheria & Maliver, has been elected to the prestigious Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County.

The Academy, which was founded in 1958, boasts an elite membership of 250 highly regarded trial attorneys in the region and is focused on improving the civil litigation process in Allegheny County. Dr. Maliver was one of just 10 lawyers in the county who was elected to the Academy this year.

"I am so honored to be elected by my peers to join this prestigious organization, and I look forward to working with them to promote the highest standards of integrity, civility and competence in the legal profession here in Pittsburgh," said Dr. Maliver.

The election to the Academy comes on the heels of another professional honor for Dr. Maliver. In May, she was accepted for membership to the American College of Legal Medicine, a professional community of physicians, attorneys, dentists, healthcare professionals, administrators, scientists and others with a sustained interest in medical-legal affairs.

Dr. Maliver is a third generation physician. Her parents and grandparents were physicians and, with a strong desire to maintain the family tradition, she earned her undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro before attending the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. After starting as a physician in Indiana, Penn., she observed a variety of shocking errors in patient care being given by her colleagues and realized that the medical field was limited in its ability to police itself.

"After earning my medical degree and working as a physician, I switched gears and enrolled in law school right here at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law," explained Dr. Maliver. "As soon as I graduated, I co-founded a small medical negligence law firm so that I could provide the type of individual attention and legal counsel that people deserve when they suspect they may have become the victims of medical malpractice."
